All the action from #Rio2016 Day 12

Exciting highlights of the rio Olympic events last night, beginning with athletics. America’s Elaine Thompson won Olympic gold in the 200m to complete a sprint double in Rio. Thompson, clocked 21.78 seconds to beat Netherlands’ world champion Dafne Schippers by 0.13sec to add to the gold she won in the 100m.

Away from the ladies, Usain Bolt’s bid for another 200m gold medal is still on track after he cruised into the final of the Olympic Games last night. The Jamaican sprint great eased down over the last 50m of his semi-final but still managed to clock 19.78seconds, narrowly beating Canada’s Andre de Grasse.

However, there was massive surprise as America’s Justin Gatlin and Bolt’s team-mate Yohan Blake both crashed out in the second semi final race.

In wrestling

Three of team Nigeria’s women wrestlers all crashed out in round one of the freestyle event in their different weight categories. Fighting in the 48kg class, Mercy Genesis lost 4-0 to Poland’s Nina Matkowska.

In the 58kg category, Oluwafunmilayo Adeniyi was subdued 8-2 by Maarit Olli from Finalnd While in the 69kg category, Amuchechi Reuben did not fare any better as she was overpowered by Canada’s Erzsebet Yeats 11-1.

Nigeria’s other two women representatives will feature in Todays scheduled bouts: They are Blessing Oborududu and Folashade Adekuoroye.

In football

Nigeria’s Olympic Eagles’ dreams of winning the men’s football gold medal at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games were ended last night after a 2-0 defeat to Germany.

Lukas Kostermann scored the first goal of the contest early in the first half.

A second goal by Nils Pietersen in the second half finished off the African U-23 champions who had fought bravely in the football event despite many off-fieldchallenges to get to the semi final stage .

Germany will now face hosts Brazil on Saturday for the gold medal, while Nigeria and Honduras will battle for bronze.

Speaking of the Hosts Brazil, they qualified for the final of the men’s football event after defeating Honduras 6-0

Neymar set Brazil to the path to victory, in just 15 seconds to score the fastest goal in Olympic football history.

Others who got on the score sheet include Manchester City new signing Gabriel Jesus, Marquinhos, and Luan.

Away from the Olympics and back home in Nigera for some Nigeria Professional Football League action, Rivers United upstaged Rangers at the top after securing a 1-0 win against Heartland at in Port Harcourt.

Rivers united now sit at the top of the standings with 50 points, two ahead of Rangers who have 48. Speaking of Rangers, their title bid suffered a big blow in nnewi following a 2-0 loss to Oriental rivals FC Ifeany IUbah.

In Akure, Sunshine Stars continued their push for a continental ticket with a 3-0 bashing of basement side Ikorodu United.

In other games, Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan were held to a barren draw by visiting El-Kanemi Warriors at home.

Isah akor got on the scoresheet for MFM FC at the game stadium to ensure their game against warri wolves ended 1-1.

Lobi Stars held off a late fightback from Abia Warriors to earn a 3-2 win against the Umuahia-based side while Niger Tornadoes beat Akwa United 3-0

For the latest transfer news, Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez has ended speculation about his immediate future by signing a new four-year contract with the English Premier League champions.

In Spain, Barcelona beat Sevilla 3-0 in the return leg of the Spanish Super Cup last night at the Nou Camp.

A brace from Arda Turan and a goal from Lionel Messi gave Barcelona its 12th Spanish Super Cup title.
