Guilty Adam Johnson sacked by Sunderland, Adidas
Adam Johnson has been sacked by Sunderland after he pleaded guilty to child sex offences this week.
Johnson, 28, admitted to one count of grooming and one of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl on Wednesday, and will undergo trial for two further counts of sexual activity on Friday.
The guilty plea is understood to have shocked Sunderland officials, with the club allowing him to resume his playing career having initially suspended him after his arrest in March last year.
Sunderland have now taken the decision to release the midfielder, saying in a statement: ‘In light of Adam Johnson’s guilty pleas, the club has today terminated his contract with immediate effect.’
England footballer Adam Johnson, 28, leaves Bradford Crown Court, Bradford, where he has pleaded guilty to grooming and sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl on the first day of his trial.
Johnson admitted one count of sexual activity with a girl under 16 and a further count of grooming after being arraigned on the charges, but continues to deny two further counts of sexual activity with a child. See PA story COURTS Johnson. Photo credit should read: Peter
Before the announcement, manager Sam Allardyce had confirmed that Johnson would not feature in his side’s upcoming clash with Manchester United.
Sports manufacturers adidas have also terminated their sponsorship deal with the player.
‘Adidas can confirm that it has terminated its contract with footballer Adam Johnson with immediate effect. This follows his guilty pleas entered earlier this week,’ a statement said.
