‘One Dance’ featured Kyla thought it was an April fool’s Joke, talks Afrobeats.
The UK artist Drake sampled on new song ‘One Dance’ has spoken about how she thought the news was an April fool’s joke.
Kyla’s 2008 song ‘Do You Mind’, itself a collaboration with Crazy Cousinz, is featured on Drake’s ‘One Dance’ which was released two week alongside Kanye West/ Jay Z collaboration ‘Pop Style’. Drake thanked grime DJ Logan Sama for his help bringing the track together.
Kyla revealed that the collaboration has helped spur her back into music after she took an extended break in recent years in order to have a family.
“When we phoned, the company said ‘A huge international star wants to sample your tune and they wanna have a meeting with you’. I was like ‘Yeah ok, who?’ and when they said Drake I was like ‘Yeah right!’ We signed papers and I still didn’t believe it. I had a feeling someone was gonna say to me ‘April Fools’.”
She also talks AfroBeats. “When we phoned Sony and they said that it was Drake and Wizkid, I was like, “This is a really unusual mix.” I couldn’t quite see where ‘Do You Mind’ would fit in there, but it’s brilliant. I think it’s because Afrobeat is very similar to funky.” She told Fader.
