RIO OLYMPICS UPDATE:

IN BOXING

The International Boxing Association (AIBA) has dropped a number of judges and referees at the Rio Olympics after a review of decisions at the Games.

The move comes a day after Ireland bantamweight Michael Conlan suffered a controversial defeat to Russian boxer Vladimir Niki-tin.

The federation said some decisions were not at the level expected in the fight , as well as in a few other games at the event.

IN ATHLETICS

Defending champion Mo Farah reached the Olympic men’s 5,000m final in Rio.

Farah, who has won the past four global titles over 5,000m, is looking to claim a second gold in Rio after winning the 10,000m.

IN BASKETBALL,

We now know how the basketball knockout stage will look like.
The USA’s NBA stars will face Argentina while Spain will play European rivals France in another key quarterfinal clash.
In other quarterfinal games, Australia meets Lithuania while Croatia and Serbia will be doing battle.

IN WRESTLING

Nigeria’s representative, Aminat Adeniyi failed to replicate the form that got her a gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games after losing to her Finnish opponent, Petra Olli, in the Olympic women wrestling event.

Adeniyi started the game on a roll, taking a 2-0 lead but lost steam to lose the bout 8-2.

IN FOOTBALL

Neymar scored the fastest goal in Olympic history when he put the ball in the back of the net after 15 seconds at the Maracana Stadium as Brazil went on to thrash Honduras 6-0 in the Olympic semi-final in Rio de Janeiro.

New Manchester City signing Gabriel Jesus, , then netted in the 26th and 35th minutes as hosts Brazil took an unassailable 3-0 lead into half-time.

Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos then landed a goal of his own for Brazil in the 51st minute and Luan made it a rout after a brilliant team move from Rogerio Micale’s men in the 79th.

Barcelona star Neymar then got a brace of his own, converting a penalty after Luan was fouled in added time.

BACK IN NIGERIA

Giwa FC, the club that has been associated with so many controversies this season has been supresingly readmitted to the Nigeria Professional Football League.

league organizers, the League Management Company said they are bringing back the troublled club becos they are being ordered to do so by the Plateau State High Court.

The LMC also said players of Giwa FC now with other clubs in the league can no longer feature in matches as the court order takes immediate effect.

The league also said processes to reschedule matches concerning (the) Jos side (are) now being activated.
You may recall that Giwa FC were thrown out of the league months ago after they failed to honour three successive matches following their banishment to Ilorin over crowd trouble.

ON THE INTERNATIONAL SCENE

Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart is now seriously considering a move away from the club after being dropped for the first two games under Pep Guardiola.

With just two weeks left of the transfer window, Hart, looks to be only interested in a loan move in order to examine his options as city chase after Barcelona keeper Claudio Bravo.

Guardiola had once again opted to start with Argentine Willy Cabayero in their 5-0 Champions League qualifier victory over Steaua Bucharest after hart was also dropped during the weekend.

We move on to another premier league club, current champions Leicester city.

Their prized winger Riyad Mahrez has said something fans of the club would not want to hear.

The Algerian says he could leave Leicester if “two or three” of the world’s leading clubs come calling.

Mahrez was voted the PFA Player of the Year after playing a major role in Leicester’s memorable Premier League title-winning campaign.

He has since been linked with a move to a number of clubs.

Bad news for Liverpool.

Their red-hot striker Sadio Mane has had a scan on a shoulder injury he suffered during training today and it looks like he may be out for a while..

Mane had signed from Southampton for £34m and has been very impressive ever since

IN BOXING

Vladimir Klitschko says he will take Tyson Fury to court to ensure their world heavyweight title rematch still takes place.

He said both boxers are supposed to square off in the month of October but Team Fury is, once again trying to change the terms of an already signed contract , something they have done a number of times in the past.

Fury, won the WBO, WBA and IBF belts from the klitchko last year, but was forced to pull out of the initial rematch months ago after injuring his ankle in training.
