Melissa McCarthy Crowd-Surfs to Accept Comedic Genius Award
The Boss star became the first woman to receive MTV’s Comedic Genius Award on Sunday. After crowd-surfing to the stage, she accepted the award from hosts Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart (who she called “Mr. Rock Johnson” and “The Rock’s assistant”). McCarthy thanked the female comedians who inspired her, including SNL’s Jane Curtin, Lucille Ball, Phyllis Diller and Whoopi Goldberg. She also thanked her mother, who she said taught her to “not to fear being the butt of the joke” and to “lovingly go for the kill.”

Introduced to the stage by Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner, Grande was joined by Broadway composer Jason Robert Brown for the single. The artist arrived in a pink ball gown (a la Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes) with a glittery necklace and fur shawl.
Will Smith Receives Generation Award
“That was a lot; I wasn’t quite expecting that,” Smith said, accepting the award, revealing that when the network told him it planned to give him the Generation Award, “I thought that was code for the old ass dude award, ‘Congratulations, your best work’s behind you'”
Deadpools Dance to Salt-N-Pepa’s “Shoop”
Zac Efron and Seth Rogen took the stage Sunday to present Ryan Reynolds with best male comedic performance, but the awards show had another performance in mind before he could accept. Salt-N-Pepa performed “Shoop,” a song that was brought back into popularity thanks to Reynolds’ Deadpool. The ’90s duo performed the song before his acceptance speech alongside several costumed dancing Deadpools.
