Ariana Grande will turn you into a believer in her empowering video for “God is a woman.”
Following the videos for “No Tears Left to Cry” and “The Light Is Coming,” the pop powerhouse once again teams up with Dave Meyers for the ethereal clip. Whether she’s floating in space or naked and covered in a pool of paint, Grande shows the power of a woman in the striking scenes.
Men hurl insults like “bitch,” “hoe,” and “fake” at her while she stands back to back with an army of women. Later, she appears as a flame and straddles the Earth. In one illustrated scene, she flaunts a pregnant belly as Mother Nature (“If you confess, you might get blessed”).
Her idol Madonna makes a voice cameo as God herself. “And you will know my name is the lord when I lay my vengeance upon you,” says Madge. Ari then throws a gavel through the glass roof of a building, smashing it to pieces.
In the final scene, she recreates Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam painting with all women. “When all is said and done, you’ll believe God is a woman,” she sings. Amen.
“God is a woman” follows “No Tears Left to Cry” as the second single off Grande’s upcoming album Sweetener, due Aug. 3. The album also features the Nicki Minaj-assisted “The Light Is Coming,” plus contributions from Missy Elliott and Pharrell.
